Arcing generates intense localized heat, produces the crackling sound, and is a direct fire risk.
If crackling is accompanied by burning smell, visible sparks, or smoke — turn off the main breaker immediately if safe to do so without approaching the source, then call 911 and a licensed electrician. If crackling without smoke — do not use the panel further, call a licensed electrician immediately. Do not open the panel, identify the source, or reset any breakers.
Intermittent clicking — distinct single clicks rather than continuous buzzing — typically indicates a breaker repeatedly tripping and resetting, or a breaker mechanism responding to a recurring load spike. A series of rapid clicks with the circuit repeatedly losing and restoring power suggests a breaker responding to a fault condition that isn't consistently severe enough to hold the breaker tripped — an intermittent short circuit or ground fault that comes and goes.
Identify which circuit lost power after the clicking and note what was operating on it. Reduce the load on that circuit. If clicking continues after load reduction, the cause is a wiring fault — call a licensed electrician. Don't continue using a circuit whose breaker is clicking repeatedly.
