Full Replacement

Removes the existing can housing entirely. Installs a standard or fan-rated ceiling box at that location — directly available for pendant mounting using standard hardware. Existing circuit wiring connects to the new box.

Use when:

Pendant is heavy and requires a properly rated ceiling box

A completely clean ceiling without an adapter plate is needed

Existing can shows marine-environment degradation

Project is part of a broader renovation with ceiling access

Weight confirmation is mandatory before purchase. Adapter kits mount to the existing recessed can housing — not a structural ceiling box. Most adapter systems are rated for 10 to 15 pounds maximum. A lightweight glass or fabric pendant is well within range. A heavier metal or ceramic pendant may not be — and discovering this on installation day means a different conversion method is needed.

The Electrical Connection — What Happens Inside the Can

Whether using an adapter kit or full replacement, the electrical connection at the conversion point is the same type of work. The existing can's junction compartment contains the supply circuit's hot, neutral, and ground conductors — these connect to the pendant's supply wires at the ceiling location.

At the Can Housing (Adapter Kit)

Black, white, and ground conductors from the circuit connect to the pendant's supply wires using wire nuts inside the can housing. The adapter's decorative plate covers the original can trim ring at the ceiling surface.

At the New Ceiling Box (Full Replacement)

After the can housing is removed, a replacement ceiling box installs at the same location — either to the existing joist attachment or via a brace-mount system. Circuit wiring connects to the box, pendant mounts using standard hardware.

Ground Connection — Required for All Metal Pendants

All metal pendant fixtures require proper grounding — the fixture's ground wire or ground screw connects to the circuit's ground conductor. Required under NEC Article 410 regardless of the conversion method. Cannot be skipped.

The Existing Switch

The existing wall switch continues to control the pendant after conversion — no switch work required unless the homeowner wants to add dimmer control. If a standard toggle switch exists, replacing it with a compatible LED dimmer is a straightforward substitution.
