How PIR Sensors Detect Motion — The Foundation of Every Placement Decision
A PIR sensor doesn't detect motion the way a video camera does. It detects changes in the infrared radiation pattern across its field of view — the heat differential between a warm body moving through the detection zone and the static background behind it. Two implications drive every placement decision:
Lateral Movement Detected Better Than Approach
A person walking across the sensor's field of view produces a large, rapid infrared change. A person walking directly toward the sensor produces a much smaller change — the heat signature grows slowly without crossing detection zones. A sensor placed to the side of an approach path detects significantly better than one aimed head-on at approaching subjects.
Temperature Differential Required

On hillside lots where the ground drops away from the structure, wall mounting height and effective detection height are not the same. A sensor at 8 feet on a wall above a 4-foot retaining wall drop is effectively at 12 feet relative to the lower grade. The detection angle must account for the actual elevation difference, not just the measurement on the wall.
Orient the Sensor to Catch Lateral Movement
Position the sensor so the primary approach path crosses the detection zone laterally rather than heading straight toward it. For a front driveway — mount on the side wall of the garage or at a nearby corner where an approaching person walks across the field of view, not directly above the garage door facing outward. For a side yard gate — mount on the wall adjacent to the gate where the person opening it crosses the sensor's field rather than approaches it head-on. For a backyard — position at a corner where movement crosses the zone rather than aimed outward from the center of the back wall.
This is counterintuitive — the instinct is to aim the sensor at the area you want to light. But positioning it to catch lateral movement produces significantly better detection.
Keep Heat Sources Out of the Detection Zone
Any heat source in the detection zone can produce false activations — or mask real detections by reducing contrast between a warm body and the background. Common heat sources that cause false activations at Castaic properties:
HVAC condensers exhausting warm air into the sensor's field of view
Barbecue grills and fire pits near patio sensor coverage areas
Parked vehicles retaining heat for 30–45 minutes after engine-off

Survey the planned detection zone at the time of day when the sensor will be most active. For HVAC equipment specifically, orient the sensor so the condenser unit is behind it rather than in front.
Eliminate Dead Zones in the Coverage Plan
A dead zone is an area within the intended coverage area that the sensor can't see — caused by an obstacle blocking the sensor's line of sight, or by the edges of the detection field falling short of the area boundary. Common dead zones at Castaic properties:
A parked car blocks the sensor's line of sight to everything behind it. Someone approaching from the far side of a driveway vehicle may not be detected. A second sensor covering the approach from the other side, or elevation high enough to see over the roofline, solves this.
A retaining wall creates a dead zone for any sensor mounted at the upper level. A dedicated sensor positioned to cover the lower grade area is needed — the sensor mounted above the wall cannot see what's happening below it.
Trees and shrubs within the detection zone block the sensor's view of everything behind them — and also produce false activations when wind moves their leaves through the detection zone. Prune vegetation within the primary detection zone or position the sensor to minimize vegetation coverage.
A sensor flat on a wall cannot see around the corner. A sensor mounted at a corner — angled to cover both wall faces — provides significantly better coverage with fewer fixtures than two wall-mounted sensors.
Avoid Sensor-to-Sensor Interference
When multiple motion sensor fixtures are installed at a property, detection zones can overlap in ways that produce conflicting behavior. Sensors aimed at each other's mounting locations can produce a feedback loop where one sensor's heat output activates an adjacent sensor, which then activates the first — continuous activation without any real detection event.
The solution: sensors should be oriented away from each other's mounting positions. Detection zone overlap in the space between sensors is desirable — it closes coverage gaps. Sensors aimed at the adjacent fixture itself is the problem to avoid.
