How a Breaker Reset Actually Works

A circuit breaker has three distinct positions. When a breaker trips, the handle moves to the TRIPPED position — mechanically distinct from OFF. Many failed reset attempts skip the required step of moving the handle fully to OFF first.

ON

Circuit energized. Handle fully toward the ON stop. Normal operating position.

TRIPPED

Handle midpoint between ON and OFF. The breaker is not OFF — it's in a mechanically distinct tripped state. Cannot reset directly from this position.

OFF

Circuit de-energized. Handle fully toward the OFF stop. Required intermediate position before resetting to ON.

Why a Breaker Won't Stay On — Five Scenarios

Circuit Still Overloaded

MOST COMMON

A breaker trips from overload when total current draw exceeds the breaker's rated amperage on a sustained basis. After the trip, the bimetal element needs time to cool — which is why a breaker that just tripped from overload often won't reset immediately. But if the loads that caused the overload are still connected and drawing current, resetting the breaker puts it back into the same overloaded condition and it trips again within seconds to minutes.

LOS ANGELES CONTEXT

LA's older homes — bungalows, Spanish-style, courtyard apartments from the 1920s–1950s — were wired for the load of those decades. A 15-amp circuit sized for a few lamps and a radio now serves a modern kitchen or a bedroom with window AC, computer, monitors, and charging stations. The circuit hasn't changed. The load has.

DIAGNOSTIC TEST

Unplug or turn off every device on the circuit. Reset the breaker. If it stays on with nothing connected, the circuit was overloaded. Add loads back one at a time — the breaker will trip again at the overloading combination, identifying which devices are the problem.

Short Circuit in Wiring or Device

A short circuit occurs when a hot conductor contacts a neutral or ground directly — bypassing the intended load. It produces a massive instantaneous current surge, trips the breaker immediately with a distinct snap or pop, and the breaker won't stay on if the short is still present. If you reset and it trips the instant you release the handle, the circuit has a persistent short circuit.

DEVICE SHORT

Unplug all devices, reset breaker. If it stays on, plug devices in one at a time. The device that trips the breaker when plugged in has an internal short — replace the device, not the circuit.

WIRING SHORT

If the breaker trips with nothing plugged in, the short is in the wiring itself. Do not continue resetting — call a licensed electrician to locate and repair.

Ground Fault on the Circuit

A ground fault is an unintended current path from a hot conductor to ground. Standard breakers trip on ground faults only when fault current exceeds the trip threshold. GFCI breakers and GFCI outlets trip on as little as 5 milliamps — required in wet locations where even small ground faults are dangerous.

LOS ANGELES GFCI NOTE

Many renovated LA homes have GFCI protection provided by a GFCI outlet at the first outlet in the circuit — not by a GFCI breaker at the panel. If a bathroom, kitchen, garage, or outdoor outlet has no power, check all GFCI outlets in the home for a tripped reset button before assuming the panel breaker is the issue. A tripped GFCI outlet can kill power to all outlets downstream of it on the same circuit.

If a GFCI breaker won't stay on after proper reset, either the ground fault is still present on the circuit, or the GFCI mechanism in the breaker itself has failed. Same diagnostic approach as a short circuit: remove all loads, reset, add back one at a time.

Arc Fault Detected by AFCI Breaker

COMMON IN RENOVATED LA HOMES

AFCI breakers detect the specific electrical signature of arcing — the waveform pattern produced by a loose connection sparking, damaged insulation arcing to a neighboring conductor, or a failing device. Required by NEC Article 210.12 for bedroom circuits in new construction and by California Code for additional circuit types in renovated Los Angeles homes.

GENUINE ARC FAULT

Loose connection at outlet, switch, or junction box. Damaged wiring with insulation contacting adjacent conductor. Failing appliance with internal arcing. In older LA homes, frequently found at backstab push-in connections that have loosened over decades of thermal cycling.

NUISANCE TRIPPING

Some motor loads — older vacuum cleaners, some power tools, certain dimmer-controlled lighting — produce waveforms that AFCI breakers may interpret as arc fault signatures. If the AFCI trips consistently when one specific appliance runs, evaluate that appliance for nuisance tripping.

DIAGNOSTIC TEST

Remove all loads from the circuit, reset the AFCI breaker. If it stays on with nothing connected, add loads back one at a time — the load that trips the breaker is either creating an arc fault or causing nuisance tripping. If the AFCI breaker trips with nothing connected, the arc fault is in the wiring — call a licensed electrician.

Breaker Has Failed Internally

COMMON IN OLDER LA PANELS

Circuit breakers are mechanical and electrical devices with a service life. After years of normal operation — tripping and resetting, thermal cycling from load changes and ambient temperature variation — the internal mechanism can fail. A failed breaker may trip at currents well below its rated amperage, refuse to reset to the ON position at all, or reset to ON but immediately trip again with no load on the circuit.

Don't Replace a Breaker With a Higher-Amperage Breaker to Stop Tripping

Replacing a 15-amp breaker with a 20-amp breaker because it "keeps tripping" removes the protection the breaker provides. The wiring on a 15-amp circuit is rated for 15 amps. Running 20 amps through 15-amp wiring because the breaker no longer trips creates a fire risk in the wiring — the cable overheats without any breaker stopping the current. This is one of the most dangerous DIY electrical mistakes made in Los Angeles homes.

Don't Continue Normal Panel Use While a Breaker Is in an Unknown Failure State

If a breaker is not operating reliably — tripping at wrong levels, refusing to reset, or resetting and immediately tripping with no load — have it evaluated before continuing normal use of the panel.
